about
Ashley's Lament is probably the oldest (but freshest?) song on the CD. I remember demoing a guitar-driven version of this with a whistling solo sometime in 2003 with P. Bartleby in Brooklyn.
But I kept hearing the song with piano in my head, so I asked my multi-instrumentalist pal Mike Ingenthron to learn the piano bit for it. He came in and nailed it in two or three takes. Awesome. Daydream Believer redux!
lyrics
Ashley's Lament
There she goes, talking on the phone again,
Friday night, party later with her friends,
It’s at Megan’s house and her parents are out of town.
A double dare, now she’s gotta show the goods,
the boys all stare thinking what you think they wood,
‘Cause it’s all about her,
the buzz is getting louder
Mom thinks she’s still her little girl,
dimple cute and those straight As,
But there is something that she don’t know,
that her sweetheart is a Pop tart,
Oh, Ashley, won’t you wait until you’re older,
Ashley, who’s this Johnny calling you?
Baby try to hold on to what you’ve got,
stay true to what you know.
Wonders why her Mom should care,
isn’t she busy with her own affair?
And like he’s cute, but she wants to know,
is he ready to go steady?
A double dare, now she’s gotta show the goods,
the boys all stare thinking what you think they wood,
‘Cause it’s all about her, the buzz is getting louder
Oh, Ashley, won’t you wait until you’re older,
Ashley, who’s this Johnny calling you?
Baby try to hold on to what you’ve got,
stay true to what you know.
