about

Here is my rockin' cover of "I'm Your Puppet" a super fine soul tune written in 1965 by one of the late greats Dan Penn, along with his partner Spooner Oldham.

I came to this song originally via The Boxtops (Alex Chilton's 1960s group), who did their cover version in 1967. Since then, "I'm Your Puppet" has been recorded by many artists over the years.

My version is a bit longer, with more drums, more guitars (check the raveup near the end!) and more rock, and hopefully keeping the soul, too! Hope you enjoy it!

The song was originally put out as a single by Penn. Then, in 1967, soulsters James & Bobby Purify put out a version that was a hit, and was later nominated for a Grammy for Best R & B performance.

Dan Penn Talks About Some of His Hits

“I’m Your Puppet”: “We’d done our usual, which was go get a barbecue plate or a burger. Then we came to the studio, and I had just bought a little 12-string guitar that sounded pretty good, so I just started playin’ [voices the guitar line from the song], and Spooner just slid in with [he makes the familiar keyboard sound]. Next thing you know, we’re into this song.

I started writin’ stuff down, we cut a little demo on it and me and Rick came up to Nashville and put some strings on it. Actually, it was a record that came out on me, I believe on MGM, but it was called ‘The Puppet’—wasn’t no ‘Your.’ My little record didn’t do anything, and it went to the demo file. So when producer Don Schroeder brought the Purify brothers in, they went to the demo file and they picked that one out. When they started singin’ it, they sang ‘I’m your puppet’—they couldn’t remember, I guess. And I didn’t like it anyway; I thought it was too fast, kind of a rip-off of Sam & Dave, I thought. At least that’s what I was thinkin’ then. Later on, when it came out and became a hit, I loved it. It was easy to get on board later.”

lyrics

Pull the string and I'll wink at you, I'm your puppet
I'll do funny things if you want me to, I'm your puppet

I'm yours to have and to hold
Darling you've got full control of your puppet

Pull them little strings and I'll kiss your lips, I'm your puppet
Snap your fingers too and I'll do some flips for you, I'm your puppet

Your every wish is my command
All you gotta do is wiggle your little hand
I'm your puppet, I'm your puppet

I'm just a toy, just a funny boy
That makes you laugh when you're blue
I'll be wonderful, do just what I'm told
I'll do anything for you
I'm your puppet, I'm your puppet

Just pull them little strings and I'll sing you a song, I'm your puppet
Make me do right or make me do wrong, I'm your puppet

Treat me good and I'll do anything
I'm just a puppet and you hold my string,
I'm your puppet, Yeah, I'm your puppet

I'm a walking, talking, kissing, loving puppet hanging on a string,
I'll kiss you and hug you and love you Whoo! I'll do anything,
I'm your puppet, I'm your puppet.
