about
I nicked the opening of 'Melody, Guaranteed' from GBV's great song "The Best of Jill Hives". I like to think I then moved it into my own space from there, but yeah, that Pollard song was in my head that whole year. I dug playing the synth part in the middle on Hugh's synth.
Ever so truthful, these lyrics. But I found room for a Wizard of Oz line or two in there as well. Nick away, they say!
lyrics
Melody, guaranteed
Saved my soul from the living gloom,
countless years in a different room,
Surrendered to sentimentality,
hugs and kisses, baby, you and me,
And now I’ve got all these rhymes,
to fill up all this time,
and there’s a rock part too,
and it’s right here!
I’ve no desire for stopping,
for fear I’ll be forgotten,
Guaranteed melody,
sing my songs tonight,
Write, repeat, then easy street,
innocence defined,
I’m running out of time.
Get up at 12 and go to work at one,
an hour for lunch and at 2 I’m done,
Gaze at my plate until it’s far too late,
miss the call, hesitate,
And time ain’t on my side,
a glimmer unsatisfied,
and all I ask of you
is to throw your weight my way.
I’ve no desire for stopping,
for fear I’ll be forgotten,
Guaranteed melody, sing my songs tonight,
Write, repeat, then easy street, innocence defined,
I’m running out of time.

I played all the instruments, Hugh Wilson recorded and mixed it. I recorded the guitars and synth in his apt.
